Why Printer Maintenance Is Needed
Avoid Common printer problems by scheduling a printer preventative maintenance appointment or printer annual maintenance appointment. Your appointment includes cleaning and replacing a maintenance kit tailored to your specific printer. Performing preventive maintenance on your printer can greatly reduce the amount of downtime experienced. Which also prevents most printer failures.
Are you experiencing paper jams at increasing intervals, prints starting to come out “smudgy” or “dirty”, lines appearing on your prints, or your paper prints crinkled when exiting the printer?
All of these are signs that it’s time to service your printer and avoid catastrophic failure. The fuser assembly makes up a huge part of the Maintenance kit tailored for your printer. It is a consumable item and is meant to be replaced at regular intervals. Although, depending on the amount of use your printer receives, this may need to be replaced sooner. The amount of time between suggested fuser replacements may change depending on the volume of pages printed. Many manufacturers suggest a minimum of once a year to maintain the best printer performance and functionality possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Average life of a printer fuser?
There are guidelines for usage from the manufacturer but they can be affected by many variables. Refer to a page count, not a time length, based on usage you may meet that page count sooner than expected.
Some of the many variables are toner quality, type of printed material (i.e. labels), or type of paper. If using low-quality aftermarket toner this can be a definite contributor to wear on the fuser. Low-quality toners can leak, this excess toner collects in the fuser and will damage it prematurely,
Labels can attribute to another source of damage. Therefore, it is possible to safely print labels or forms that include labels. When using labels improperly or haphazardly, glue from a label can ruin a fuser.
Lastly, be sure the paper stock being used is appropriate for the model and style of your printer. Using the wrong paper can damage the fuser. Putting it in a paper tray that is not designed for pickup of that type can cause paper jams; can cause damage to your fuser if not removed correctly.
Is printer feeding from the wrong paper source?
- Check the Printer Properties on the computer for the printer. Find the tray selection source and make sure it is set to pull from the proper tray.
- On your printer check to make sure that the paper sizes are in the correct trays according to that on your computer. If asking to be fed through the manual feed. It may be what is set on your computer for the printer, or the default paper size is not set up properly in the printer settings compared to the computer settings.

Vertical lines during printing?
Typically a service call is needed to diagnose the cause of this issue. Vertical lines can be caused by a problem with the fuser or involve the transfer belt.

Printer jamming every other page printed?
As a printer fuser starts to fail, jams will occur more often. However, there are many causes for paper jams. The error code that appears each time it jams will help determine the cause. During printer repair, we will use the error code to provide the correct printer repair services.
Strange noises coming from printer?
Printers have many moving parts. From picking up the paper from the tray and moving it through the machine to depositing it in the output tray. Strange sounds can generally be an indication that your printer fuser may need to be replaced.
Are printed items coming out bent or crinkled?
As a printer fuser starts to fail, printed items will exit the printer with small crinkles. For example, the corner of the page, or the entire page will exit the machine with creases. Contact us at Mattes Computer and Printer Repair for immediate service. Repair of your printer will be provided as soon as possible.
Prints are coming out dirty or smudgy?
The first step with this type of print quality is to check the toner cartridge. Remove from the machine and inspect for any damage or excessive leakage. Next, is to replace it with another toner cartridge. If all else fails to solve the issue you may need to replace the fuser.
Printer not being detected/recognized by computer?
If you have determined the printer is connected correctly and turned on, this could be indicative of a potential network connection issue. There are steps that can be taken to troubleshoot this issue to determine if you need a service call:
- Make sure that the computer that controls this printer on the network is also turned on.
- Confirm the IP address that the printer is using is the correct one. If you recently experienced a power outage it may have changed the IP address.
- You can always try to reinstall the printer.
- Assuming there are no issues with the network itself. First, troubleshoot that all the connection wires from the printer to the network are good.
- Swap cables with a connection cable you know are functioning.
- If possible remove the printer from the network and connect the printer directly to a computer
Horizontal lines showing up during prints?
First, is to check the printer toner cartridge. Remove it from the machine and look it over for any damage or excessive leakage. The next step is to replace it with another toner cartridge. If all else fails to solve the issue you may need a service call to diagnose the problem.
Printing has faded areas?
Although the status on your printer shows toner left in the toner cartridge, replace the toner cartridge and test how your prints come out once replaced. Printer repair is needed if replacing the toner cartridge doesn’t solve the problem.
How to find an error code?
While having trouble with your printer, utilize the event log or configuration sheet to obtain the error codes the machine recorded.
From the menu on your printer, you can find an option for printing the configuration page. You should be able to locate the event log report under information or reports on the printer menu.
The configuration sheet will include an event log with the last three errors. Event logs will have a list of the last 50 errors. These error codes can aid Mattes Computer and Printer Repair tremendously in providing printer services. Helping you diagnose the cause of your printer trouble. Especially with paper jams, paper jams can be caused by many areas of the printer. Such as the tray, the input or the output assemblies, or due to a faulty fuser. The error code associated with the event will help us identify which area of the printer is causing the issue.
A new toner cartridge is causing streaks on prints?
Most of the time, it’s due to a bad toner cartridge. Regardless of if you are using Original Manufacturer or aftermarket remanufactured printer toner cartridges. Occasionally, you will get a toner cartridge. Therefore, switch out the toner cartridge and run 50 or so pages. See if the problem resolves. If all else fails, printer repair is needed to determine the cause of the problem.
Paper jam but can not locate the piece of paper?
In this situation, it’s important to take note of the error code shown on the printer (if the printer has a display). Also, this is a situation where you should contact us at Mattes Computer and Printer Repair. A printer repair service provider and schedule a service call. If an error code is displayed, this will point us to the area of the machine causing the paper jam. It is possible for a piece to tear off and lodge itself inside the fuser. If the jammed paper can’t be easily removed following the correct paper path.
